Storytelling Workshops for Adults with Jenni Cargill

Ever wished you had the confidence to address a group, but your knees knocked too loudly? Or have you got that confidence, but you’d like a few more skills? Or are you already a good presenter, but you know you’d really shine if only you could use stories more skillfully? Whether you experienced or terrified, whether you are a teacher, author, parent, early childhood worker, grandparent, librarian, poet, corporate presenter, housewife or husband - err correction: domestic Goddess or God … or simply a story lover, Jenni’s storytelling workshops can help you!

In a gentle, yet playful, way professional storyteller Jenni Cargill supports workshop participants to become more confident as presenters and storytellers. Weaving between demonstrations; simple, fun games; pair work; group activities and down-to-earth visualisation, participants are taken on a delightful journey through the world of story, giving basic tools from the storyteller’s toolbox to enliven any presentation

The Tale Brought to Life

(2 hours)
This workshop I gave at the Byron Bay Writers Festival 2004.

What's the difference between a story well read and a story well told? Find out at Jenni Cargill's storytelling workshop. Use nervousness to give you more energy for telling and bring tales to life using some simple vocal and other techniques from the storyteller’s toolbox.

Storytelling: The Adventure Begins

(13 hours)
The full version of this course is 13 hrs plus breaks. It can be a six week series of 2 hr sessions or a one or two day course. I have taught this course through Byron Shire A.C.E since 2003.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to bring a story to life, using your bare hands, your naked voice, some passion and some gumption? Throw the books away and dive in as you gain a few tools for your storytelling toolbox, including mime, vocal sound effects and ways to 'cast the golden net'. It is not about writing stories but about how to bring a story to life in the imaginations of your listeners. This is a highly participative, introductory course- fabulous for parents, teachers, public speakers, librarians, childcare workers or anyone with a love of story and a desire to take it further. No experience necessary- just a willingness to join in and a sense of fun.

Enlivening Presentations with Storytelling

(6 hours: 3 x 2hrs)
Presented through A.C.E 2006

In a gentle, yet playful way, professional storyteller Jenni Cargill supports workshop participants to become more confident as presenters or storytellers. Weaving between demonstrations; simple, fun games; pair work; group activities and down-to-earth visualisation, participants are taken on a delightful journey through the world of story, to give them some basic tools from the storyteller’s toolbox which will enliven any presentation.

Walking through the Archetypes

(3 x 2hrs) New!

A delicious exploration of the archetypes. Students choose characters from folktales or myth and then after connecting with the inner child and lateral mind through games and playful exercises, participants ‘flesh out’ their own very personal version of that character. The results can be liberating, healing, thought provoking and a great deal of fun!

A Myth for Our Times

(6 X 2 hrs or 2 weekends) New!

The workshop begins with performances of myths and folktales. After each story, participants discuss which parts feel relevant in the modern age. Then Jenni will guide students to devise their own collective “Myth For Our Times”. A performance of the collective myth by the group would be optional.

The Teacher

Jenni trained at the Drama Action Centre full- time from 1990 to 1991 in Sydney. Since then, she has toured Australia and New Zealand (see CV and www.jennicargill.com.au ). As well as specialising in storytelling, she studied mime, voice, Le Jur, mask, dance, rhythm, movement, clowning and improvisation. Her trainers used a very hands-on approach and Jenni teaches in a similar way, but has adapted the exercises for those without a background in drama or who are not naturally extraverted. Her aim is to make storytelling as accessible and fun as possible to the wider community.

If you live in Northern NSW and you’d like to do a course with Jenni, contact Jenni for details. Occasional workshops could be negotiated further afield for large groups.
